Trump Welcomes Families of Injured National Guard Soldiers to the White House
Former President Donald Trump announced on the weekend that he has asked the family of a Guard member tragically killed last week to come to the presidential home.
He added that he contacted her parents and they were “devastated”.
Information on the Tragic Event
Soldier Sarah Beckstrom, 20, was killed in a attack on Wednesday in DC.
Her comrade, Andrew Wolfe, 24, is still in the hospital in critical condition.
Vigils across West Virginia have taken place in their remembrance.
White House Offer
The president said he’s discussed a visit to the White House for the loved ones of both members of the state Guard.
“I said: ‘When you’re able, because that’s a hard experience, come to the White House. We’re going to pay tribute to her,” Trump addressed the press. “And in the same way with him, no matter the outcome.”
Community Reaction
Community members came together over the past few days at a local school in the state to honor Beckstrom.
Both she and Wolfe had been fulfilling duties with the West Virginia National Guard as part of the president’s national effort to aid policing efforts in DC.
Honoring the Soldier
“Sarah was the kind of student that teachers hoped for. She carried herself with quiet strength, a contagious smile and a optimistic attitude that lifted people around her,” the principal, the head of her alma mater, stated to the media. “She was sweet, compassionate and always willing to help others.”
Funeral details for Sarah are still being arranged.
Judicial Steps and Government Changes
Authorities have accused a twenty-nine-year-old Afghan national with a charge of homicide and two counts of assault with intent to kill while carrying a weapon.
The event led the administration to pause asylum applications and halt granting visas to holders of Afghan passports.
Condition of Wolfe
Wolfe, a native of Martinsburg, started his military career in February 2019 and is a graduate of his local high school, as reported by the Associated Press.
He is still undergoing care and is “battling to survive”, West Virginia governor Patrick Morrisey stated on television.
Attorney general Bondi told Fox News Sunday that she aimed to speak to his relatives.
Impact of Sarah Beckstrom
Sarah, from her hometown, completed her education from Webster County High in mid-2023 and began her service not long after, serving as a military police officer with honor, as stated by the military.
“She had a lot of kindness and she certainly had courage,” he told the gathering at the service. “Though her time was cut short, she has created a legacy that’s going to endure.”
