The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Song
The Mighty Nein, the newest animated series from the beloved role-playing group, unveiled an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases the beloved cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals fighting hard and making their mark, while also hinting at multiple agonizing backstories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, Fjord.
All in all, the intro looks stunning. However, I felt that something was missing in the song choice.
The intro employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. This piece from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label their music brand. It's a wonderful sentimental option, and I believe that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.
Personally, The series' opening doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by musician the artist, became an immediate hit in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the melody for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the track was catchy and fun. At the time, I hadn't seen the follow-up series at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an episode of adventurous fun.
The show's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Naturally, the creators has already said that the animated show will have some surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening seems to be among these.
This animated adventure will be released on Prime Video from Nov. 19. If you can't wait before that, or want a head start to get to know the personas of the second series, the actual play are available on Spotify and YouTube.
