The Latest Relaxed Playlist Ignites Intense Discussions Over AI Players, Experience Points, and Wait Times

Over the weekend, Battlefield Studios introduced a fresh game mode titled Casual Breakthrough. In essence, this mode resembles the standard Breakthrough format but features several notable adjustments:

  • Each team has only 8 real players, with the remaining made up of AI-controlled opponents.
  • Actions done by human gamers grant full XP, while bot actions provide lower rewards.
  • Just a pair of maps can be played: Cairo Siege and Empire State map.
  • Features like Player tags, achievements, and career stat updates have been turned off.

So essentially, this mode delivers on its title: it's a laid-back version of Breakthrough. At face value, you might think there's nothing wrong, since it gives more options for players looking for different ways to have fun with the title. But, gaming history have taught us anything, it's that not everyone will be happy. In other words, a lot of BF6 players are mad.

Player Responses: Anger to Support

"People want human opponents. Avoid making the errors of your rivals," states a response to the official announcement. "Absolutely shocking idea," says another. Meanwhile, on the Battlefield subreddit, a player notes, "It's unclear where we are headed with this title," and another lists everything they consider to be problematic in Battlefield 6: "Fix bugs, fix drone glitch, correct rocket mechanics, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, fix awful hit registration. We do not require this AI-heavy playlist."

However, amid the criticism, there are players explaining how much they're liking the recent addition. "It's enjoyable to warm up, human participants keep it from being a complete grind but it's very relaxed," says one Reddit comment. "The community doesn't understand that there are players who have lives and don't play this game 24/7. Let them find a middle ground," states a different comment. One reply on Twitter explains that as they're "a battledad with limited time, this is perfect for me," and someone else praises the mode for "not being overcompetitive."

Valid Criticisms and Community Input

All that said, there are constructive reasons to criticize Casual Breakthrough. A few folks have highlighted that it could increase wait times more extended for different playlists because of the sheer number of playlists in the game already. On a similar note, some areas already encounter AI-filled matches in the current modes. It also seems a little backwards that the mode does not begin without a required amount of human gamers, despite it primarily centers on combat against bots.

Finally, a major complaints is that Battlefield Portal was promised to offer full XP, including AI matches, but that was removed when they attempted to remove bot farms from the mode. Thus this new playlist feels like the community meeting them halfway, according to forum feedback. Another labels this addition as the developers "dropping the ball so hard, I experienced great enjoyment in the first couple of days, why did they feel the need to adjust it?"

Future Prospects: Adjustments Occur?

Should the development team has demonstrated something so far with the latest installment, it's that they're paying attention and acting on player input. Tasks that were overly hard were adjusted rapidly, just like the specific battle pass objectives. It is likely that, if their data shows this recent mode isn't performing to their standards, they will not hesitate to make further modifications.
