A trio of officers lost their lives and at least 15 additional individuals got wounded in an apparently premeditated gas explosion at a country home in northern Italy.

How It Happened

The blast occurred as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the house in the vicinity of the city of Verona to enforce an eviction order for three siblings who were older adults.

All three officers killed were members of the Carabinieri military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

One male and one female were taken into custody at the site and a third person who ran away following the explosion was located not long after. All three have been transported to medical facility.

The detonation could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the scene displayed the property left as a pile of rubble.

“We are in a period of mourning,” said the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to remove the three family members in the earlier times.

Background and Motive

The president of the region of Veneto, President Zaia, stated the farmhouse was facing an eviction order due to unpaid amounts accumulated by the property owners.

Negotiators had been dispatched to speak to the family members who had locked themselves into the house. When the police arrived soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect one of the siblings set off the detonation.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno told the media.

“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the detonation immediately struck our officers,” he explained.

Molotov cocktails were also discovered at the property, the interior minister stated.

Impact Assessment

Injured individuals by the explosion consisted of an additional 11 personnel of the military police as well as three officers of the state police and a fire services member.

As stated by the Verona prosecutor, the property was in a derelict state and had no electricity.

The prosecutor thought the detonation had occurred on a floor above the entrance and stated to the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the blast, he said members had “heard a whistle, likely the gas canisters being opened”.

Community Reaction

“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents stated to reporters, adding that the family members had earlier warned to “cause an explosion” rather than vacate the property.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

Minister of Defence the Defence Minister joined other government officials in honoring the three men who had been killed in the line of duty.
