Democratic lawmakers Denounce Trump After He Claims They Should Face Execution
Democratic officials voiced fury after the ex-president alleged a group of Democratic representatives of being "traitors" and declared they should be taken into custody and penalized "through capital punishment" following their publication of a contentious video.
The Recording That Triggered the Dispute
The recorded message, shared on Tuesday, includes six Democratic congress members who formerly acted in armed forces or security positions.
"As we did, you all swore an pledge to protect and defend this national charter," the officials affirmed in the 90-second video. "At present, the dangers to our democratic foundation are not only from foreign nations, but from within our own country. Our laws are clear, you can reject unlawful commands, you can decline unlawful commands, you should reject improper directives. No one has to follow orders that violate the legal system or our constitution."
The Former President's Furious Reaction
The video message reportedly prompt a heated reply from the former president.
On the following morning, Trump wrote on his social media platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional message, he declared: "This is really concerning, and Dangerous to our Country. Their words cannot be allowed to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent post, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a statement that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Representatives Answer
Following Trump's comments on that day, Democratic leadership published a combined declaration denouncing the statements.
"Partisan aggression has no position in this nation," they declared. "Congress members who appeared in the video all acted our United States with tremendous loyalty and distinction. We clearly condemn Donald Trump's appalling and risky death threats against members of Congress, and call on GOP representatives to vigorously do the same."
The party representatives also mentioned that they had been in touch with security officials "to make certain the protection of these representatives and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must right away delete these unhinged social media posts and recant his dangerous language before he gets someone killed," the announcement continued.
Representatives' Firm Reaction
The representatives who appeared in the video also published a response.
"We serve as veterans and defense specialists who care for this country and took an pledge to safeguard and uphold the founding document of the United States," they said. "This commitment lasts a lifetime, and we intend to honor it. No intimidation, coercion, or incitement will deter us from that sacred obligation."
"What's most telling is that the ex-president views it subject to penalty by execution for us to restate the legal requirements," they added. "Armed forces members should know that we have their support as they fulfill their oath to the national charter and responsibility to obey only lawful orders. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our duty."
They stated: "Every American must come together and censure the ex-president's demands for our execution and political violence. This is a period for moral clarity."
Further Political Reactions
The Opposition leader also censured Trump's comments and published on social media: "It's important to understand: the ex-commander in chief is demanding the death of elected officials."
He continued: "This constitutes an outright THREAT. Each congressional member, all representatives, all citizens – irrespective of political affiliation – should condemn this immediately and without qualification."
The GOP leader supported Trump's allegation that the Democrats had engaged in "sedition", labeling the video as "wildly inappropriate", stating: "This constitutes very risky, you have important representatives of the legislature advising military personnel to disobey orders, I think that is without precedent in the nation's past."
The Conservative representative also allegedly stated to journalists that in what he reviewed of Trump's publications, Trump was "explaining the violation of rebellion" but that "legal experts have to analyze the wording and determine all that."
White House Statement
During a administration briefing on that day, when questioned by a reporter, "Does the president want to put to death elected officials?", the administration spokesperson responded: "No."
"We should understand about what the president is addressing," the spokesperson stated. "You have current representatives of the American legislature who worked together to orchestrate a digital communication to individuals of the US military, to serving soldiers encouraging them to defy the executive's legal commands."
She said: "The integrity of our military rests on the command structure, and if that chain of command is broken, it can result in people getting killed, it can result in confusion, and that's what these elected officials ... are fundamentally promoting."
