At least 64 Dead in Rio de Janeiro's Largest Police Raid on Gangs
No less than 64 civilians lost their lives in a security raid against the organized crime group in the Brazilian city's northern districts - the biggest and most lethal operation in the region's past.
Four law enforcement personnel lost their lives during the police action in the communities of Alemão and Penha, local authorities said. In excess of 80 individuals were detained.
Intense confrontations erupted when about 2,500 law enforcement officers entered the area on Tuesday morning. The criminal organization reacted using shooting, burning barricades and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, police representatives confirmed.
The United Nations human rights body said it was "shocked" by the law enforcement raid, calling for "immediate and thorough inquiries".

The slum neighborhoods close to the aerial transportation hub is seen as the main base of a major organised crime groups.
Government representatives confirmed a minimum of 50 of the fatalities were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Residents have likened the mountainous region - housing around 300,000 residents - to a "battlefield" since the operation began.

Gang Growth
The Red Command group has been increasing their influence in the area, increasing drug trafficking routes and power in the informal settlements.
Security forces said over 200kg (441lb) of drugs were confiscated in the operation, along with multiple guns.
